The start of my business has a few catalysts that lead up to it. I was working for a plumber back during COVID-19 and, long story short, ended up losing my job. I applied for over 70 jobs around Sioux Falls and got one call back. During that time, businesses were getting government subsidies for being short-staffed. After about three months of searching for a job, I decided that my only option was to start my own company.
I started researching what it would take to start a business in South Dakota and what I was qualified to do. After researching, I realized I had the necessary certifications to be a locksmith and was already skilled and proficient. I got my first pick set when I was 15 because Natalie (my wife) was notorious for locking herself out of her apartment. The first time I tried to pick her lock, it went incredibly quickly, and I fell in love. I started doing competitive lock sports all through high school. After high school, I joined the military. I spent four years doing that and working for a contracting company as a finish carpenter installing locks, doors, and windows.
After the contractor, I worked for the plumber for a year and a half before losing that job. When I started my company, we used up all our savings to stay caught up on bills. We were down to our last $200. I decided my best option was to buy car lockout tools and start by only doing that. I continued to do that for about two months while saving up. I purchased an excellent lockpick set and some commercial lockout tools.
I continued working, recycling any money I made back into the company. After about ten months, I could sell the car I was working out of and buy my van, as well as an automotive key cutter and programmer. I have continued doing the same thing: making money, paying bills, and buying stuff for the business. November 15th will be my two-year mark in the industry.
